What’s Leaving Netflix in October 2020: Shows and Movies to Catch

As a very wise woman named Leslie Knope once said, “Everything hurts and I’m dying.” In October, Netflix will be shutting down Knope & Co.’s parks department as it parts ways with NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation. Unfortunately, Parks and Rec is one of many shows and movies that will be leaving Netflix in the coming weeks, including The Green Hornet, live-action movie The Last Airbender, and Sleepless in Seattle.

But it’s not all bad news: for every title leaving, three more shows or movies will be coming to Netflix in October. Next month, blast off with animated musical Over the Moon, let out that angst with teen drama Grand Army, celebrate Spooky Season with Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween, and more.

Why Does Netflix Remove Movies and Shows?

It’s complicated, but here’s our best shot at explaining why this happens: Netflix has spent tens of billions of dollars since its inception to build up their library of shows and movies that they own either outright or control for a long stretch of time, commonly known as Netflix Originals. Everything else on the service has been licensed from another studio or production company, some of whose business interests align with Netflix, and some of whose compete directly with Netflix. As the tectonic plates of the streaming industry continue to shift, Netflix is either gaining or losing the rights to house these movies and shows on their service. Once a month, Netflix sends out a list of everything that is going to expire from their service so their customers can plan accordingly.

Parks and Rec has been widely available to stream for years and years now, as the show has been a staple on not just Netflix, but also Amazon Prime Video and Hulu. While the Golden Globe-winning show will be leaving both Netflix and Prime Video on September 30, 2020, Leslie Knope superfans will be glad to learn that the show will still be available to stream on both Hulu and Peacock.

Highway To Heaven: Leaving October 31

Highway To Heaven was one of the biggest network TV hits of the mid-’80s. Starring Michael Landon, the show centered around a brand new angel trying to earn his wings. Uplifting and heartwarming, the show will definitely be missed when it leaves Netflix, but don’t fret as Highway o Heaven will still be streaming on Amazon Prime.
