Trump slams Jeff Sessions, US attorney who handled years-long Hillary Clinton probe

President Trump blasted a little-known US attorney from Utah who oversaw an investigation into issues related to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the top federal prosecutor “did absolutely nothing.”

In a tweet posted Wednesday, the commander in chief promoted a spoof account for US Attorney for Utah John Huber while calling the real Huber “a garbage disposal unit for important documents.”

“Undercover Huber is a great spoof, funny, but at the same time sad, because the real @JohnWHuber did absolutely NOTHING. He was a garbage disposal unit for important documents & then, tap, tap, tap, just drag it along & run out of time,” he wrote on the social media platform.

Trump closed out the post by saying that his former Attorney General Jeff Sessions “was played like a drum” by Huber.

Sessions tapped Huber, who has served as Utah’s chief prosecutor since 2015, in November 2017 to evaluate “certain issues” involving the ties between the Clinton Foundation and the sale of Uranium One, a Canadian uranium company with ties to mining stakes in the US, to a Russian nuclear agency.

Huber was also tasked with reviewing Clinton’s handling of classified emails during her tenure as secretary of state.

The investigation was kept relatively quiet for years, even when House Republicans expressed their outrage at Sessions in early 2018, when he refused to appoint a second special counsel, arguing that he wanted to see the results of Huber’s probe first.

Although the probe was officially closed in January of this year, Huber’s work was largely done when former Special Counsel Robert Mueller filed his report in March of last year on Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to The Washington Post.

Officials close to Huber and his Clinton probe told the newspaper that the prosecutor had found nothing worth pursuing on the matter, making it unclear why it took so long for the investigation to close.

Unlike Mueller and Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s probe of the FBI’s handling of the Russian collusion investigation, Huber’s work did not result in a lengthy, publicly-released report detailing his findings.
