Trump campaign email urges supporters to wear facemasks

The president’s 2020 campaign on Tuesday tapped its email network to ask supporters to wear facemasks while out and about.

“We are all in this together, and while I know there has been some confusion surrounding the usage of face masks, I think it’s something we should all try to do when we are not able to be socially distanced from others,” read the campaign email, which was signed by President Trump, CNN reported.

President Trump, who had resisted wearing face coverings in public throughout the coronavirus pandemic, pivoted to support the safety measure in July when he was photographed donning a facemask while visiting a military hospital in Maryland.

The campaign message comes as the coronavirus continues to ravage the US after months of state-mandated lockdowns and reopenings. More than 4.7 million confirmed cases have been reported in the US — far more than in any other country.

Trump in his message stressed that if enough Americans wore facemasks, the country could more quickly return to a semblance of normalcy, echoing messaging from his health experts.

“I don’t love wearing them either. Masks may be good, they may be just okay, or they may be great,” the email added. “They can possibly help us get back to our American way of life that so many of us rightfully cherished before we were so terribly impacted by the China Virus.”

The resurgence of the virus this summer in states like Florida, Texas and California have exacerbated uncertainties around reopening schools this fall — when experts and officials had originally hoped to have already successfully beaten back the pandemic.

“My feeling is, we have nothing to lose, and possibly everything to gain, including the next chapter to our country, and to keep things open whether it be schools or businesses,” Trump, in the email, went on.
