The Boys Season 2 just got a new addition. The second installment of the superhero series is adding Shawn Ashmore, who will take on the role of Lamplighter, Collider reports.
When The Boys returns to streaming this fall, we’ll learn more about the characters’ pasts, all thanks to Lamplighter. In a press release today, Prime Video teased Ashmore’s new character, describing him as “a former superstar and a member of the Seven before he left under mysterious circumstances to be replaced by Starlight.” But even more intriguing is his history with The Boys. “He’s actually the reason they broke up 8 years ago,” the press release added. “So when he enters their lives again, he dredges up painful memories, pokes at their raw nerves, and changes everything.”
The Boys Season 2 picks up with The Boys on the run and living in hiding from the Supes. Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) regroup and have to carry on without Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), who is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, the Supes have a new addition with Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social media guru who threatens Homelander’s plans for control.
Because Ashmore was a fan of the show before he was cast, he was already curious about his new character. “I watched the show before I was cast, so I sort of knew [Lamplighter] and I was wondering about this character,” he shared in a statement. “What was fun for me stepping in is that a lot of the mythology and the backstories are already built, and I was asking myself who is this character? What is this character? There’s going to be a preconceived notion of who this character is based on his actions, based on how people talk about him. What the show does well with everybody including Lamplighter is peel some of those layers back.”
“We were thrilled that Shawn — who is, let’s be honest, an OG superhero — wanted to play the crucial part of Lamplighter,” added showrunner Eric Kripke. “He brings so much depth, menace, and world-weary humanity to this former member of the Seven. And Shawn is a really good guy. We’re grateful to have him join our bloody little family.”
See Ashmore make his debut as Lamplighter when The Boys Season 2 premieres on Prime Video Sept. 4.
