‘Rare’ Rosa Parks letter about ‘truly great’ Martin Luther King selling for $54K

A handwritten letter Rosa Parks penned about Martin Luther King’s contribution to Civil Rights is on sale.

The Oct. 6, 1981 artifact is being sold by Moments in Time for $54,000, reported this week.

Addressed to a Mr. Kessler, the brief letter details the admiration and respect the “First Lady of Civil Rights” had for King, who was assassinated in 1968 at age 39.

“It is difficult to put in words, on paper any comments about the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. So much has been spoken and written about him by so many other people,” Parks, then 68, wrote, according to a picture published by Moments of Time.

“I admired and respected him as a truly great man committed an [sic] dedicated to Freedom, Peace and Equality for all oppressed humanity.”

Parks goes on to name King “a leader of the masses in Montgomery, Alabama and the nation” as well as “a devoted husband, and father” and “a loving and loyal son.”

“His sister brother and other family and relatives loved him dearly as all of us who were fortunate to know him,” she concluded, signing the letter Rosa L. Parks.

“It’s the only letter I’ve ever seen where [Parks] talks about King, and it’s totally handwritten, which is quite rare,” Moments in Time CEO Gary Zimet told the outlet, noting that even Parks’ typed communications “are scarce.”

Both King and Parks, who died in 2005 at age 92, are lauded as icons of the Civil Rights movement and the fight for racial equality.

Parks is best known for her role in the public transit protest against segregation known as the Montgomery bus boycott, which lasted from December 1955 to December 1956.

There’s a statue of Parks in Montgomery’s downtown area.
