‘Mulan’ Is Coming To Disney+ On September 4 (For $30)

Good news, Disney fans: Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan is headed to Disney+ next month, on September 4, 2020. Bad news, Disney fans: The movie will cost an additional $29.99.

In an earnings call for Q3 FY2020 on Tuesday afternoon, Disney executives explained the plan to release the highly anticipated film, which was originally set to open in theaters on March 27, 2020. The fate of the film has been up in the air for some time, given that it was expected to be a big box office win for Disney worldwide—until theaters shut down worldwide thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and remain mostly closed in the U.S. Now, like another Disney film originally intended for theaters, Artemis Fowl, Mulan will come to Disney’s streaming service, Disney+. But unlike Artemis Fowl, subscribers will be charged an additional of $29.99 to rent the film in the U.S., according to a report from CNET. In countries where Disney+ is not available, such as many countries in Africa, the film will open in theaters on the same date.

Disney CEO Bob Chepak said in the call that this is not necessarily the model that other big Disney films intended for theaters before the pandemic—such as Black Widow—will follow. “We’re looking at Mulan as a one-off, as opposed to say there’s some new, business windowing model we’re looking at,” he said, and added that Disney is looking at how subscribers react to the $29.99 price point, as well as transactions.

Mulan (2020) is directed by Niki Caro, and written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin. It is a live-action remake of 1998 animated film of the same name, and stars Liu Yifei as Mulan, alongside Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles. Filming took place in 2018, and a trailer for the film was released last December.
