Hamtramck mayor tests positive for coronavirus, remains mainly asymptomatic

Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski has tested positive for coronavirus, she announced in a Facebook live video addressing the city's latest COVID-19 figures Monday.

"One of those 290 cases (reported in Hamtramck) is me," Majewski said. "Despite always wearing a mask in public and in open air on the street and enclosed spaces — avoiding groups as much as possible — I've now tested twice for COVID-19."

Almost two months have passed since Majewski's last live COVID-19 morning address. The videos stopped in mid-June as the city seemed to be making good progress — often going several days in a row with no new cases reported, she said.

Majewski said she was shocked to see a regression in the city's infection rate in recent weeks with new cases reported every day. On June 14, the day of Majewski's final address, the city had 180 cases and 22 deaths. Hamtramck has 290 cases and 24 deaths as of Saturday.

Despite her diagnosis, Majewski said her lifestyle has not been greatly impacted.

"Except for some minor symptoms that normally I wouldn't even give a second thought to, and that really don't affect my ability to function in any way, I'm not sick," the mayor said. "I've not had a fever and food still tastes way too good to me, I'm still doing 10,000 steps a day, I'm still busy and working."

Majewski's Facebook page has since been flooded with well wishes from Hamtramck residents wishing her a speedy recovery.

Hamtramck ranks 16th in Wayne County — excluding Detroit, which reports its COVID-19 data separate from the county — with 302 cases and 24 deaths as of Monday.
