Fire Pit Sales Are Skyrocketing—Here’s Where You Can Still Get One

As we all get used to the idea of spending this summer at home in our own backyards, it’s the little luxuries, like roasting marshmallows and curling up next to a fire, that count. So it comes as no surprise outdoor fire pit sales are way up. According to Elizabeth Przygoda, principal at Boxhill Design, her company can’t make them fast enough. One of her teams of artisans is currently 450-plus fire pits behind schedule, with pieces shipping out between eight and nine weeks at best, rather than the normal two to three week lead time. And people aren’t just buying up ordinary steel boxes: Boxhill’s contemporary styles are in high-demand, including an ultra-modern concrete option ($3,840) and a mid-century modern-inspired pick with a shiny copper shell ($2,250)—both of which are still up for grabs. “Clients are pressing go on their landscape plans faster than I’ve seen in my 20-year career,” says Przygoda.

Terrain and Wayfair are experiencing similar spikes, with many styles on back-order until September. (Terrain’s copper tray option is one of the few still in inventory, and an affordable $200 mesh pit with nearly 400 reviews tops Wayfair’s best-seller list.) Want to be whipping up s’mores before autumn rolls around? Here are four in-stock finds to snag now.

The Art Piece

Crafted by Arizona-based maker Brandon Williams, this sculptural pick (made out of 14-gauge steel that’s been laser-cut into undulating spires) exudes funky mid-century vibes, making it the perfect fit for an Acapulco-chair-dotted backyard.

The Long-Lasting One

Terrain’s Chiminea fire pit has only been around for a year, but the product is already the company’s top-seller. The steel piece is meant to age with grace in the elements and develop a textured, rust-like finish, so you don’t have to stress over upkeep.

The Budget-Friendly Pick

This one’s smooth bowl shape is as simple as it gets, allowing it to play nicely with any style of furniture. As the wood crackles, lay down the removable, metal mesh dome cover to help contain the embers.

The Conversation Starter

The rectangle is the winning shape of the summer as far as fire pits go. This black iron one spans four feet wide, so everyone who wants to make s’mores can do so while social distancing.
